News Desk: At least 18 Bangladeshi migrants have died in a tragic boat disaster off the coast of Greece while attempting to reach Europe from North Africa, sparking grief and renewed calls for stronger protections for vulnerable migrants.
In a statement issued on March 29, Mia Golam Parwar, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former Member of Parliament, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which reportedly occurred on March 27 (Friday). They claimed the lives of at least 22 migrants, including 18 Bangladeshis.
“This is truly heartbreaking,” he said, offering prayers for the departed souls and extending condolences to the bereaved families.
Parwar emphasized the urgent need for coordinated and effective measures by governments and international organizations to ensure the safety of migrants who risk their lives on dangerous sea routes. He warned that without a humane and sustainable solution to the global migration crisis, such tragedies will continue to occur.
He also called on concerned governments and international human rights organizations to take immediate steps to prevent similar incidents and urged the provision of adequate financial compensation to the affected families.
The incident highlights once again the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants seeking better opportunities, often falling victim to unsafe and illegal travel routes across the Mediterranean.
