Md. Mijanur Rahman Akanda, Phulpur: There is an extreme shortage of vegetables in the markets of Mymensingh’s Phulpur upazila. As a result, people are confused by the high prices of vegetables. The prices of vegetables and all kinds of raw materials in the upazila markets including Amuakanda, Chankanda and the bus station of Phulpur municipality are much higher than before. People are not able to buy vegetables as required due to low import of vegetables in the local market and market. By inspecting the surface, it can be seen that per kg round potato is Tk 70, eggplant Tk 120, beans Tk 250, potal Tk 90, tomato Tk 240, carrot Tk 180, radish Tk 100, bitter gourd Tk 110, burbuti Tk 120, Kakrul Tk 100, Chichinga is being sold at Tk 110, sweet gourd at Tk 80, raw papaya at Tk 40, cauliflower at Tk 160, cabbage at Tk 120, kachurmukhi at Tk 100, cucumber at Tk 120 and kachur lathi at Tk 120. Radishes are being sold at the rate of Tk 40, red vegetables at Tk 35, Kalmi vegetables at Tk 25, Puishak at Tk 30 and gourd at Tk 50. Moreover, the retailers are selling local onions at Tk 120, LC onion at Tk 110, green pepper at Tk 360, ginger at Tk 240 and garlic at Tk 260 per kg. A buyer who came to buy vegetables in Amuuakanda market said that the prices of all the daily necessities are already high. On top of that, the price of vegetables is high now. Running a family has become impossible. Another customer, rickshaw driver Manik Mia, said that after driving the rickshaw for two days, I earned 650 teha and came to market. Raw materials are all finished. Can you buy medicine and other things for the baby? Aminul Haque, a raw material seller in Amuakanda Central Market, said that the import of raw materials in the market is very low. The price of vegetables is high due to low import. Harun Or Rashid Talukder, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer of Vaitkandi Union of the Upazila, said that due to the sudden heavy rains and hill slopes of India, there has been a severe flood in the neighboring upazilas including Phulpur. 145 hectares of vegetable garden of farmers in Phulpur submerged in flood water. As a result, there is a shortage of vegetables in the markets.
