Kushtia Correspondent: A local Awami League leader was taken from the front of his house and beaten to death by the opponents in Bheramara of Kushtia. The Awami League leader’s son is fighting with death after being seriously injured in this incident. Awami League leader Intaj Ali Sheikh (48) died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 10 pm on Sunday. Deceased Intaj Ali Sheikh, organizational secretary of Dharampur Union Awami League of Bheramara Upazila and general secretary of Dharampur Union Awami League, was a follower of former UP Chairman Sahabul Alam Lalu. He was also involved in tobacco and bidi business. The deceased’s family and local sources informed that Awami League leader Intaj Ali Sheikh along with his son Shakeel (25) was returning to his home in Mahishadora village of Dharampur Union after his business work around 10 pm last Saturday. At one point, when they reached the gate of the house, a group of miscreants caught Intaj and his son Shakeel and brought them to the street to beat them with hammers, rods and sticks and beat them there too. At one point, when they fell down on the ground, the herdsmen thought they were dead and left them there and ran away. Family members and locals rescued them in alarming condition and first admitted them to 250-bed Kushtia General Hospital and later admitted them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital when the condition worsened. Intaz Ali Sheikh died while undergoing treatment there on Sunday around 10 pm. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bheramara police station Gholam Mostafa confirmed the death of Intaz Ali Sheikh and said that a case was filed in Bheramara police station the next day against 17 people in connection with the beating of Awami League leader Intaz Ali Sheikh and his son on Saturday. Intaz Ali’s brother Rabiul Islam filed the case as the plaintiff. Now that Intaz Ali Sheikh has been killed, a new murder case will be filed. However, the police have not been able to detain or arrest anyone in the incident of the previous assault and death. Regarding the murder, General Secretary of Dharampur Union Awami League and former UP Chairman Sahabul Alam Lalu said that the joint general secretary of Upazila Jubo League Abdul Aziz is bringing outsiders from different parties into Awami League and Jubo League. He claimed that it was the infiltrators in Jubo League leader Abdul Aziz’s shelter who had systematically killed a selfless and devoted Awami League leader like Intaz Ali Sheikh. He also said that the Awami League leaders and workers and even the whole union people are afraid of these intruders and are suffering from extreme insecurity. We immediately demand exemplary punishment for the killers of Awami League leader Intaj Ali Sheikh. Deceased Intaj Ali Sheikh is the son of deceased Montaj Ali Sheikh of Mahishadora village of Dharampur Union. He is the father of wife, three sons and two daughters. Talking to the local Awami League leaders and workers, Intaj Ali Sheikh played an important role in campaigning for the chairman candidate Sahabul Alam Lalu who got party nomination from Awami League in the Dharampur Union Parishad elections held a few days ago. Lalu was the elected chairman of this union for two consecutive times.
But in that election, Sahabul Alam Lalu was defeated by Shamsul Haque, brother of Upazila Jubo League Joint General Secretary Abdul Aziz, by a margin of only 500 votes. Intaj Ali Sheikh was displeased with the opposition for Sahabul Alam Lalu’s active participation in the election. Also, some people were having a dispute with Intaz Ali Sheikh over the occupation of a place in front of the house. Intaj Ali Sheikh could not get possession of that land even after trying for a long time. It is believed that this murder may have happened based on these incidents. About 8 months ago, Danez, a fishmonger of Dharampur Union, was killed in an attack by Zia gangs who joined Jubo League from BNP. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bheramara police station Golam Mostafa said that the motive behind the attack and murder is not yet clear. Police have started an investigation. We hope that it will be possible to find the motive of the murder and arrest the killers very soon.
