Diplomatic Correspondent: Chinese Embassy in Dhaka yesterday hosted a seminar commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, with Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen urging the international community to safeguard peace, uphold justice and resist attempts to distort history. The seminar, titled “Shared Memory and Contemporary Mission: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War”, brought together over distinguished participants, including deputy press secretary to the Chief Adviser Md. Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, senior government officials, diplomats, academics, political leaders, media representatives, and members of the Chinese community in Bangladesh. Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Yao Wen said the victory of the Chinese people’s war of resistance against Japanese aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was an unprecedented struggle in human history that decisively defeated fascism.
“It was a great victory of justice over evil, light over darkness, and progress over reactionary forces,” he said, noting that as the main battlefield in Asia, China made tremendous contributions to the ultimate victory.
The envoy underscored the need to remember history and honor the sacrifices of fallen heroes, while cherishing the hard-won peace. He called for upholding the universal values of peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy and freedom.
Ambassador Yao also urged the international community to resist any distortion of history or glorification of aggression and to safeguard the achievements of World War II.
“Together, we must build a community with a shared future for humanity,” he stressed. Former Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury and former Ambassador to China Mahbub Uz Zaman lauded China’s sacrifices and role in the Anti-Fascist War.
They emphasized that correctly understanding history is essential to ensuring peace and preventing the recurrence of past tragedies.
Dr. Chowdhury observed that the post-war international order and multilateral system must be preserved, while Ambassador Zaman described the seminar as “highly significant” in enhancing mutual understanding and promoting the long-standing friendship between Bangladesh and China.
Leaders from political and business circles also joined in commending China’s contributions and reflecting on the lessons of history.
Communist Party of Bangladesh President Md. Shah Alam, Revolutionary Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Haque, and Vice-President of the Chinese Enterprise Association in Bangladesh Han Kun underscored the inseparable links between peace and development.
Vice-President of the Bangladesh Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China Ye Liang recalled the role of overseas Chinese in the anti-fascist struggle and pledged continued efforts to strengthen China-Bangladesh ties.
The seminar concluded with participants watching “The Guardians”, a short video highlighting the service of the Chinese military.
