Md. Mijanur Rahman Akand, Phulpur: The continuous rains of the last few days and the mountain landslides from Meghalaya in India have flooded the low-lying areas and created a terrible flood situation in Mymensingh’s Phulpur.
Most of the areas of Chandhara, Rambhadrapur, Sinheshwar and Phulpur Union of the upazila have been submerged in water. In about 20 villages of the upazila, 8 thousand people are trapped by water. The communication system of various villages has been blocked due to submergence. The local people are in extreme trouble. Upazila’s 4060 hectares of rice seedlings and 145 hectares of vegetable gardens have been submerged in hilly landslides. Fish ponds have sunk in different parts of the upazila. Meanwhile, new villages of Phulpur are being flooded due to the breach of Malizhi and Chellakhali rivers in Nalitabari upazila. However, with the help of upazila administration and local volunteers, livestock and people are being evacuated to safe shelter. Several shelters have been opened for the flood victims in different unions. Meanwhile, Upazila Nirbahi Officer ABM Ariful Islam has provided emergency relief assistance after inspecting the flood situation. So far one person has died due to drowning in flood water.
