Rahmatullah Miah: Amar Bangladesh Party believes that imposing indirect taxes on citizens goes against the spirit of the July-August people’s uprising. Party leaders have stated that the decision to increase Value Added Tax (VAT) and customs duties without consulting stakeholders is unjust and short-sighted.
At a press conference held at the AB Party’s central office in Bijoynagar yesterday, the leaders voiced their concerns about the VAT increase and customs management.
Demanding the cancellation of VAT and customs duties, AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Monju said, “Do not treat the country’s poor people like the looters of the Awami League. The prices of essential goods have been rising steadily, and now, with the imposition of new VAT, the lives of the people will become even more unbearable.”
AB Party General Secretary Asaduzzaman Fuad added, “We believe that the VAT system should be gradually reduced and eventually abolished, replacing it with a direct tax policy based on earnings and profits. Implementing the budget by exploiting the hardships of low-income citizens is incompatible with the goal of creating a society based on equality, human dignity, and justice.”
AB Youth Party member secretary Hadiuzzaman, Dhaka South City Joint Convenor Abdul Halim, North City member secretary Selim Khan, Joint member secretary of South City Ahmad Barkaz, Joint member secretary of North City Abdur Rob, and Organizing Secretary of South City Abdul Halim were also present at the press conference.
