Moon Desk: The recent Sham-polls in India has culminated in a significant shift in the political landscape, with preliminary results indicating a stark defeat of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s extremist narrative of Hindutva.  Indian premier Modi despite securing a third term, the elections has exposed deep-seated discontent against the Hindu nationalist BJP’s tactics and policies.

Throughout the election period, Modi and his party were embroiled in controversies, deploying a range of negative tactics aimed at suppressing the opposition.

High-profile leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, who posed substantial threats to the Modi government, were ensnared in what many have labeled false cases, resulting in arrests. Additionally, opposition leaders faced raids on their homes by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI, raising concerns about the misuse of power. The BJP’s campaign heavily relied on projecting Modi as a messianic figure on social media. However, this strategy backfired amidst rising discontent over issues like minority rights violations and flawed policies such as the Agniveer scheme, which disillusioned many young voters.

The BJP even faced defeat in Ayodhya, a city symbolically significant due to the Babri Masjid’s demolition and the subsequent construction of the Ram temple.

Modi’s narrative further crumbled under the weight of his actions in Kashmir, notably the abrogation of Article 370, which stripped the region of its special status. These moves, alongside accusations of corruption and media suppression, only intensified public anger.

The election slogan “Tesri Bar Modi Sarkar Ab Ki Bar 400 Par” (Third Term for Modi, This Time 400 Seats) fell flat as the BJP-led alliance managed to secure 295 seats, while the opposition alliance garnered 236 seats, with results from 15 seats still pending. In the 543-seat Lok Sabha, a party requires 272 seats to form a government.

Despite winning the election, Modi’s narrative suffered a resounding defeat, marking these elections as some of the most controversial in India’s history. The outcome suggests a crucial turning point, with the new government structure emerging as a potential harbinger of change.
