MM Rahmatullah: Tapan Chowdhury, managing director and CEO of Square Group, believes that it is necessary for the country’s big companies to be listed in the capital market. However, running a listed company is very challenging, he added.
He said this while participating in the ‘Conversation with Mr Tapan Chowdhury’ event organized by the Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) on Wednesday at ERF auditorium. He also talked about the price of medicine.
Mr Tapan Chowdhury in response to questions from journalists, said that the price of raw materials for medicines has increased. No company can increase the price of medicine at will. The Department of Drug Administration approves the price of drugs after verifying everything including raw material import information, VAT-tax.
Tapan Chowdhury also spoke about the country’s ready made clothing sector on this day. According to him, the garment industry has lost buyers in the recent turmoil.
Former adviser of caretaker government said that there is a need for businessmen to discuss with the interim government. He expressed hope that the current government will announce the election at the appropriate time.
In response to another question whether any company of Square Group will be listed in the capital market, he said that no small company of the industrial group will be listed in the capital market. Accountability of listed companies is not an easy matter. There are thousands of shareholders. That is why running a listed company is very challenging.
He said that the matter will be informed to the board members of Square and will be discussed when the investors’ complaints about the reduction of shareholders’ dividends are drawn to their attention.
Emphasis should be placed on actions rather than  one’s family background or political identity. If such a change comes, it is possible for the country to improve.
In response to another question, Tapan Chowdhury said, we give importance to financial management.
ERF President Mohammad Refayet Ullah Mirdha presided over the event, while ERF Secretary Abul Kashem acted as moderator.
