Md Mizanur Rahman, Chapainawabganj: Highlighting the strategic importance of the Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj for inter-country connectivity, Adviser to the Ministry of Shipping, retired Brigadier General M Sakhawat Hossain, announced an initiative to expand the port’s scope. He also mentioned the possibility of prioritizing the project under the World Bank’s upcoming development programs.
He made these remarks on Friday afternoon while speaking to reporters after holding a meeting with local administration, customs officials, and trade union representatives at the Sonamasjid Land Port.
He said, “The Sonamasjid Land Port is an old and important port. Users of the port have demanded its expansion and the establishment of a link road. In response, the local Deputy Commissioner has been asked to submit a development plan proposal.”
Regarding the expansion plan, he further added, “There are some government-owned (khas) lands adjacent to the Sonamasjid Land Port, along with some privately-owned plots. The World Bank has previously been involved in developing several other ports. If there is a relevant project in the future, it will create a good opportunity to expand this port.”
He also mentioned the construction of a link road to facilitate the transportation of import and export goods.
Among those present at the meeting were Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment AHM Shafiquzzaman, Deputy Commissioner Abdus Samad, Superintendent of Police Rezaul Karim, President of the Chapainawabganj Chamber of Commerce Md. Abdul Wahed, and Managing Director of Panama Port Link Limited Zahura Naosaba.
