Nakla (Sherpur) Correspondent: Cotton cultivation has become popular in the barren grasslands of the Brahmaputra which flows past Nakla upazila of Sherpur. As the weather is favorable, it is clear that the farmers will get several times more profit compared to the cost. Over the years, interest in cotton cultivation is increasing day by day among the local farmers of Nakla due to low cost and high profits. Large and middle class farmers of the upazila are leaning towards cotton cultivation as they get more profit in this climate tolerant cotton cultivation. Cotton is incomparable, now it has become white gold for farmers.
Farmers of Chandrakona and Charashtadhar Union of the upazila are benefiting by cultivating carpus cotton in Nakla. Farmers of other unions are also interested in cotton cultivation. The amount of cotton cultivation in the upazila and the number of farmers is gradually increasing due to limited labor and government support in barren land. The cotton produced by them is directly purchased by the Cotton Development Board at a fair price. As a result farmers are getting more profit from cotton than other crops.
