Diplomatic Correspondent: Bangladesh and Malaysia have expressed renewed interest in deepening their long-standing friendly relations and transforming them into a stronger and more practical economic partnership, with cooperation in manpower, renewable energy, infrastructure, education, healthcare and trade emerging as key areas of focus.
Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Dr Abdul Moin Khan said the Bangladesh government is keen to take relations with Malaysia to a new level by expanding mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Mohammad Shuhada bin Osman at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday. State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam also attended the meeting.
The discussions came against the backdrop of the recent visit of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister to Malaysia. At the outset of the meeting, the Malaysian High Commissioner expressed satisfaction over the outcome of the visit and described it as successful.
The two sides subsequently held detailed discussions on a range of bilateral issues, with particular emphasis on areas that could create new opportunities for people and businesses in both countries.
The export of Bangladeshi manpower to Malaysia was one of the major issues discussed at the meeting. The two sides also discussed the registration of undocumented Bangladeshi workers already in Malaysia.
Another important proposal was to create greater employment opportunities in Malaysia for Bangladeshi engineers. Such opportunities could potentially strengthen professional exchanges between the two countries while providing skilled Bangladeshi workers with access to the Malaysian labour market.
Healthcare emerged as another promising area of bilateral cooperation. The meeting discussed the possibility of constructing hospitals through joint initiatives between Bangladesh and Malaysia.
The two sides also placed importance on expanding opportunities for Bangladeshi students to pursue higher education in Malaysia.
With Malaysia already serving as an important destination for international students, greater educational cooperation could help strengthen academic and people-to-people links between the two countries.
Renewable energy was also highlighted as an area with significant potential for investment and cooperation.
As Bangladesh seeks to expand clean and sustainable sources of energy, greater Malaysian investment and technical cooperation in renewable energy could open new avenues for both countries.
The meeting also discussed cooperation in the production of sporting goods, another sector where Bangladesh has growing
The two countries also explored ways to strengthen economic relations in several emerging and high-potential sectors.
These included the import of electric vehicles, construction and halal food.
The discussion on electric vehicles is particularly significant as countries across the region are increasingly looking toward cleaner transportation and new technologies. Cooperation in construction could also create opportunities for investment and technical exchanges, while the halal food sector offers potential for expanding trade between the two Muslim-majority countries.
Bangladesh and Malaysia have maintained friendly relations for decades. The latest discussions indicate an intention on both sides to move beyond traditional diplomatic ties and build a more productive economic partnership.
For Bangladesh, stronger cooperation with Malaysia could mean more employment opportunities for workers and professionals, greater access to higher education, increased investment, and new markets for Bangladeshi products.
For Malaysia, closer engagement with Bangladesh could create opportunities in infrastructure, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, education and trade.
The meeting therefore carries significance not only at the diplomatic level but also for ordinary citizens whose livelihoods and future opportunities could benefit from stronger bilateral cooperation.
Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hasan and senior officials of the ministry were also present at the meeting.
