MM Rahmatullah: Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Ashraf Ahmed said that there is no major crisis in the country’s economy.

He said this in a press conference organized by DCCI on Saturday about the overall situation of the country’s contemporary economy. Ashraf Ahmed said that to maintain the speed of the economy, the supply of gas must be ensured. Imported fuel will not provide relief in the long term. But currently there is no alternative. Due to gas shortage, our industry loses hundred millions of dollars in everyday, he added.

He said there are some problems at present including high inflation, instability in reserves, insufficiency of dollars to open LCs, gas crisis. But all of them can be solved. Bangladesh has solved these problems, it is a proven fact. Foreign investment should be increased.

DCCI president said, we hope to reach 20 major economic countries of the world in the next decade. Currently, our growth is down to 10, but the growth of many countries, including China, is below five percent. We have all the fundamentals of growth in that place.

Stating that the lending process of the country’s banking sector is not sustainable, Ashraf Ahmed said that the lending capacity of this sector should be increased. Moreover, if liquidity is not increased, private sector investment and development is not possible.

Inflation has affected the whole world, he said. Our inflation has gone from six percent to 10 percent. But it is much better than the rest of the world. This problem has happened before. But we were also able to overcome.
